How to Teach English As a Second Language Using Technology Every year, thousands of foreign language teachers are hired across the country. Phonetics are their specialty- understanding alliteration, consonants, vowels, and how they work together in words. At the end of this book you will know how to teach English as a second language using technology. The author writes about how she conducts her lessons in the classroom with only her laptop and an assistant. She uses photosynth software to teach teenagers about different animals that live in the wetlands near their school or around their countries of origin that she never had an opportunity to teach them before. As she writes, "What kind of animals can you see? Representing Sounds in Words After reading the book, you will have an opportunity to test your classroom students' understanding of sounds in words through activities that are based on real life scenarios. The author discusses some intriguing questions on phonetics, while also asking you how you can teach these topics while making lessons more interactive. Dr. Opoku had written 14 books with different genres of stories including poems, romances, horror stories, travel guides and even an autobiography. Her novels are set in Ghana and Ghanaian Contexts with a lot of action. She has also produced two movies which were great successes in Ghana too. Dr. Opoku's idea of using technology in the classroom and using it creatively to engage students is what she would call her master plan. She states, "I wanted students to feel that they were actually in the school with all the activities that I was doing with them. And if you get that feeling, then that's when you help them pass the GCE A-level exams". She also wrote a children's book called 'Raising Ghumni' which is based on a ten-year old girl who has a talent for designing and making crafts and jewelry. She was raised by her mother and does not know her father because he left them when she was young. Her mother is not fully dependent on her but her grandmother wants to take over the responsibility of bringing up Ghumni. She resents this because she sees her little sister as a burden. The book depicts the emotional struggle of the young girl who finds out her father is still alive. Her teacher gives her the right advice and at the end of it all, Ghumni finds true love in one of her female friends. PART ONE I had never taught ESL before so I had no idea how to get started until I spoke to my friends, who were teachers of English Literature in some private schools in Accra. One of them suggested that I use songs or some form songs to introduce myself and greet my students. I thought about what songs could make a good introduction or a greeting, and I came up with the idea of teaching students how to sing in English, because I knew that most Ghanaians could not speak English. I taught my students how to sing the popular songs from English movies and television shows, songs which many people have heard before. Everyone sang 'You've Got a Friend' from the movie Toy Story, 'Mama Mia' from Mamma Mia! and 'Riverdance' from Riverdance. eccc085e13
